Pergolas and Patio Covers Nanaimo

More Patio Season on the Mid-Island

Nanaimo gives us beautiful summers and a long stretch of grey, drizzly shoulder season on either side. A well-built cover is what turns a deck you use in July into one you use from March through October. We design and install pergolas and patio covers that keep the rain off the barbecue, the furniture dry, and the space genuinely usable when the weather turns. The difference homeowners notice most is not the sunny days. It is the ordinary wet evening in October when the patio is still the nicest room in the house.

Louvered Roofs, Aluminum Pergolas, and Solid Covers

There is no single right answer, and the choice usually comes down to how you want to use the space and how much light you want reaching the house behind it.

1. Louvered roof pergolas. Motorized or manual louvers tilt open for airflow and sun, then close into a sealed roof when the rain starts. Best choice if you want one structure that handles both extremes.
2. Solid patio covers. A fixed roof with insulated panels and integrated gutters. Maximum rain protection, quieter in a downpour, and the warmest option under an insulated deck.
3. Open aluminum pergolas. Structure, shade, and definition without a full roof. Pairs well with climbing plants or a shade fabric over a poolside or garden seating area.

We walk the space with you before recommending anything, because a north-facing patio in Chase River and a west-facing oceanview deck in Hammond Bay have very different needs.

Built for Salt Air and Coastal Weather

Anywhere near the water on Vancouver Island, salt air is part of the equation. Powder-coated aluminum with corrosion-resistant hardware holds its finish far better than steel or untreated fasteners, and it will not rot, warp, or need re-staining every few seasons the way a timber structure does.

Wind matters too. Off the Strait of Georgia, exposed harbourfront and Departure Bay properties see real gusts, so we engineer post placement, footings, and anchoring for the actual site rather than a generic spec.

Rain, Drainage, and the Details That Matter

Most patio cover complaints in a rainy climate come down to water management. Sheet runoff off a roof edge onto your deck or up against the house siding creates problems that show up years later.

1. Integrated gutters and concealed downspouts routed away from the foundation
2. Proper slope and flashing where the cover meets the house wall
3. Post bases detailed to shed water instead of trapping it
4. Fastening into structure, not just into deck boards

Adding Shade, Screens, and Light

A cover is often the starting point. Once the roof is up, we can add integrated LED lighting on a dimmer, heaters for the cooler months, and privacy screening along an exposed side. For bugs and low evening sun, motorized screens drop down at the touch of a button and roll away out of sight when you do not need them, and the same Mirage retractable screening we install on doors works well for enclosing a covered patio opening.

Some homeowners get exactly what they need from a retractable awning instead, especially over a smaller deck or a south-facing window wall. We will tell you honestly if that is the better fit for your budget and your space.

Local Knowledge, Professional Installation

We have spent years working on homes up and down Vancouver Island, from North Nanaimo subdivisions to older character homes closer to the harbour. That means we know the permit expectations, the soil and footing realities, and how these structures actually age in our climate.

Every project is installed by our own crews, using quality partner products backed by manufacturer warranty coverage. We are not subcontracting your patio to whoever is available that week. If you are also looking at retractable screens or window coverings, we can coordinate it all as one job.
