The right choice comes down to how often you want the cover in place and how exposed the site is.

Retractable awnings. Extend for shade, roll away when you want the sun or when a storm is coming. The most popular option for decks and patios because you stay in control of the space.
Motorized awnings. Same product with a remote or wall switch, and an optional wind sensor that retracts the arm automatically when gusts pick up. Worth it on larger projections and on any deck you are not watching all day.
Fixed awnings and canopies. A permanent frame over a doorway, window, or entry. Best where you want year-round rain cover in one spot and never need to open it up.

Anywhere near the water, hardware choice decides how long the awning lasts. Homes in Departure Bay, Hammond Bay, and along the harbourfront get salt in the air year round, so we spec powder-coated aluminum frames and corrosion-resistant fasteners rather than anything that will pit and seize after a couple of winters.

Wind off the Strait of Georgia is the other factor. An awning that is fine on a sheltered Chase River patio can take a beating on an exposed oceanview lot, so we look at the actual site before settling on projection, arm style, and mounting.

Fabric, Colour, and How Much Sun You Actually Block

Solution-dyed acrylic holds its colour through island summers far better than cheaper printed fabrics, and it dries quickly, which matters in a damp climate where anything that stays wet grows mildew.

Colour is not only a style decision. A darker fabric cuts glare more aggressively, while a lighter one keeps the space under it feeling open and sends less heat down. We bring samples so you can hold them up against your own siding and see the light they throw before committing.

Mounting Done Properly

Most awning failures we get called out to fix are mounting problems, not product problems. A retractable arm puts real leverage on the wall when it is extended, and the fasteners have to reach framing or solid structure.

1. Locating studs, rim joists, or solid masonry rather than trusting siding
2. Flashing and sealing every penetration so water cannot track behind the cladding
3. Setting height and pitch so rain runs off instead of pooling in the fabric
4. Checking door swings, light fixtures, and gutters before the bracket line is set

When an Awning Is Not the Right Answer

Sometimes it is not. If you want the space usable through a wet November, or you are covering a large deck, a structure with a solid or louvered roof will serve you better than fabric. We will say so. Bugs are a separate problem from the sun. If your evenings out there get cut short by insects rather than weather, retractable screens in Nanaimo are usually the cheaper fix.
